Located in the Alsace region in the North East of France is Strasbourg. It is the capital city of the region. Strasbourg is famous for being the home of numerous European institutions including the Council of Europe, European Parliament, Eurocorps and the European Ombudsman.
In 1988 UNESCO classified the centre of Strasbourg – Grande Île as a World Heritage site. This was the first occasion that such an honour was bestowed on a city centre. The city displays many influences of both French and German culture.
Strasbourg Airport or Entzheim Airport is situated ten kilometres to the South West of Strasbourg. Domestic flights are available to Nice and Paris Orly through Air France while Britair fly to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Lyon, Nantes and Rennes and Régional fly to Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Marseille, and Toulouse. The closest flight to Ireland is operated by Scot Airways and arrives at London City Airport.
Transport from the airport includes a shuttle bus service as well as a train service. Unfortunately these do not run very often so hiring a car or getting a taxi may be a better option. Inside the airport you will find four car hire Strasbourg desks. It is an excellent choice to consider if you intend to see as much of the Alsace region as possible.
There is a restaurant in the airport called Bistrot de Chef which offers traditional Alsatian food as well a Café called Destination Café which offers drinks and snacks. The Realy shop stocks lots of books and magazines to wile away waiting times for flights while Découvrir l’Alsace gives visitors the chance to buy some local products. There is also a duty free shop at the airport.
